We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Richard "Dick" Scher (September 2, 1929 – September 1, 2025), a giant in the fields of dermatology and nail care. His pioneering work not only brought the treatment of nail disorders to the forefront of medical practice but also inspired and mentored countless young onychologists. Dick lived a long and wonderful life, and his legacy will continue to influence generations of practitioners. He graduated from the Howard University School of Medicine and completed his dermatology residency at New York University from 1956 – 1959. He was the inaugural recipient of the Council for Nail Disorders Onychologist of the Year Award in 2021 and a prior President of the Council for Nail Disorders. He served as the President of the American Academy of Dermatology in 2000 and designated his presidency as the “Year of the Child”. He was an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Dermatology and was elected to the American Dermatological Association. He was the author of hundreds of publications, including multiple textbooks, such as the foundational work Scher and Daniel’s Nails. He founded nail clinics at multiple academic institutions, including New York University, Brown University, Columbia University, the University of North Carolina, and Cornell University. He will be greatly missed.
OUR MISSION
The Council for Nail Disorders is the first organized group of healthcare professionals formed to advance education for physicians and the general public regarding diagnosing and managing nail disorders. Its mission Is to support quality patient care, education, and research encompassing the wide range of nail disorders. CND has been chartered to assist healthcare professionals in proper diagnosis and treatment in an effort to reduce the incidence and persistence of these medical conditions.
